Choosing an event to attend can get overwhelming one of the main reasons for this is that Richmond VA keeps delivering some the Hottest and Best events ever! Deciding which ones to make an appearance at can make you have the worst case of FOMO. This year I took my podcast Thyme 4 Tea with Mikita on the road to attend one of RVA’s most talked about events and it did not disappoint. Here are my 3 Reasons why RVAFW is a definite must:
- Inclusiveness: Fashion is more than looking good. Fashion is art, culture, representation, it’s the people, it’s the movement. This years fashion show took on a whole new meaning. It was all about inclusiveness. Giving opportunities to some RVA’s newest designers. I got to sit down with Owner of Pretty Gurl Kouture (http://www.prettygurlkouture.com) Before she lit up the runway we talked about her mission and what impacts she wants to leave as well as her new fall line. We also talked about how she is leading the movement on empowering women of every size to love their body by designing clothing for every”body”. Everyday we get to decide how we want to impact the world. Well new and up and coming designer Dacia Desiree is doing just that one runway at a time.
- Community: It truly is like the glue that holds it all together. Opening night I walked into the Historic Hofheimer building feeling the excitement and energy of some RVA’s local designers such as Born Fresh (http://www.thefreshshop1.bigcartel.com) and Ambition & Hustle (http://www.shopambitionhustle.com ). The RVAFW was not completed without the it’s finale. It was packed with top designers doing what they do best (Shine). My highlight was The Suit Brother’s (http://www.theherrelsonline.com) making 3 piece suits look like the New Fall women’s must have look. My most memorable and talked about moment was getting to connect with one the of most humble and down to earth TV personalities Mike Biz as well as the ultra talented Chef Tye. When you come together as a community to support one another you can only expect more great things to happen.
- Giving Back: The saying is true it is always better to give than receive. RVA held nothing back with Miss Virginia Hosting the First ever A New Me Fashion Show. This fashion show helped raise money for the Better Day Than Yesterday Intuitive Program to help families with incarcerated love ones heal and maintain a relationship during this difficult and emotional time. We all know someone who’s family has a loved one incarcerated. Our youth are the one’s that suffer the emotional, and mental hardship the most.
You too can make an impact by giving back to your community, shopping local, donating your time, attending community inspired events or just spreading the word to others. You never know who’s life you will change.
